Take a Break with Confidence: Respite Care You Can Trust

Caring for a loved one—whether they’re ageing or living with a disability—is a deeply meaningful role. But it can also be physically and emotionally exhausting. Taking regular breaks is not only essential for your own wellbeing—it also helps you continue providing quality care over the long term.

That’s where respite care comes in.

What Is Respite Care?

Respite care is short-term support where a trained professional steps in to care for your loved one, giving you time to rest, recharge, or take care of other commitments. Whether it's a few hours, overnight, a weekend away or a longer stay, respite helps you take care of yourself—while knowing your loved one is receiving quality support in a safe, compassionate environment.

You might use respite care to:

  • Rest and look after your own health

  • Spend time with friends or family

  • Attend appointments or work

  • Go on a holiday

  • Respond to an emergency or unexpected event

Types of Respite Care Available

There are several ways you can access respite, depending on what works best for your family:

  • In-home respite – a support worker comes to your loved one’s home to assist with daily activities or provide companionship. This can also include overnight care.

  • Day centre respite – group-based activities and social programs offered at a local day centre.

  • Community access respite – fun and supportive outings into the community, either one-on-one or in a group setting.

  • Short Term Accommodation (STA) – a temporary stay in dedicated accommodation to provide a change of scenery and round-the-clock care.

  • Emergency respite – support during urgent situations such as illness, injury, or crisis.

Please note: Finding Care does not provide respite in residential aged care facilities.
